On Friday, April 30th, a small but dedicated group of ASCEND volunteers joined the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, which is held across the country and indeed has multiple events in the Lowcountry.
Our group attended the event at Johnson Hagood stadium at the Citadel. The event highlights the fact that people do survive cancer and that survivors have family and friends to support them. It began at 7:00 PM and continued until the next morning, emphasizing that cancer never sleeps.
After a brief introduction, the survivors of cancer followed a color guard around the football field to the applause of family and friends. Then the supporters were recognized, as well as sponsors who helped raise money for cancer research and educational projects.
Despite the occasional downpour, we considered the event a success and will attend next year. For all volunteers, please put this on your calendar for next year about this time.
