Exercise

Physical Fitness is the ability of the human body to perform with vigor and alertness, without undue fatigue, and with sufficient energy to engage in leisure activities, and to meet physical stresses.

Regular physical activity, fitness, and exercise are critically important for the health and well being of people of all ages. Research has demonstrated that virtually all individuals can benefit from regular physical activity, whether they participate in vigorous exercise or some type of moderate health-enhancing physical activity. Despite the well-known benefits of physical activity, most adults and many children lead a relatively sedentary lifestyle and are not active enough to achieve these health benefits.

The key components to Physical Fitness are strength, endurance, agility, coordination, and flexibility. The body’s ability to change and the overall fitness level to improve occurs with an increased load to the physiological system. Participation in regular physical activity consisting of at least 30 minutes of moderate activity on at least five days per week, or 20 minutes of vigorous physical activity at least three times per week is critical to sustaining good health.

Regular physical activity has beneficial effects on most organ systems, and helps to prevent a broad range of health problems and diseases. Regular exercise is important for maintaining muscle strength, joint structure, joint functioning, and bone health.

Strength allows our muscles to move the skeleton smoothly and efficiently. Strengthening exercises increase muscle strength and balance giving the body good muscle tone. The body loses half a pound of muscle each year; using weight-bearing exercise can reverse this aging process.

Cardiovascular conditioning can improve the body’s ability to absorb oxygen efficiently, which can increase energy and improve endurance. Endurance activities also enhance mental well-being and reduce stress.

Flexibility, a limbering of the body, is critical for freedom of movement and suppleness in the muscles and joints. Regular physical activity along with a nutritious diet is key to maintaining a healthy weight. Weight gain results from a combination of excess calorie consumption and inadequate physical activity.

People of all ages, both male and female, gain substantial health benefits from physical activity. Exercising consistently reduces the risk of developing or dying from some of the leading causes of illness in the United States.
