America...Take a Stand

Anne Scandalios
I, for one, am tired of witnessing our politicians argue over what to do with the federal surplus. Let me tell you what to do with it and it might just keep them in office. Let’stalk about our healthcare or our lack of it in this country. Why aren’t the politicians questioning why we are so sick, and why our medical establishment has been unable to cure or prevent these illnesses in the first place. Cancer is at an all time high. One in three people in their lifetime will be diagnosed with cancer. This year, over 1.2 million people will be diagnosed with cancer and over 600,000 will die from the disease. Sixty thousand (60,000) servicemen were lost in the Vietnam war. Remember how distraught our country was and how many anti-war demonstrations there were? Why then aren’t we up in arms regarding this silent killer? Why is no one addressing this countrywide epidemic that is taking the lives of our loved ones? Why did not Bush or Gore consider putting this issue on their ticket? Surely, everyone has been affected by cancer directly or indirectly at some point in their lifetime. Are we as a nation resigned to the fact that this (cancer) is just the way of life? NO! IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE. LET’S TAKE A STAND TOGETHER AND SAY “NO MORE” TO OUR CONGRESSMEN AND CONGRESSWOMEN.

Political candidates are afraid to stand up the lobbyists and the large pharmaceutical companies, chemical companies, food conglomerates, dairy and beef industries, oil companies and others for fear of losing their huge contributions and their perks. The closest that the candidates get to addressing this issue is to pledge more government funds for “research”, like the “War On Cancer”, initiated by President Nixon. In the past 25 years cancer rates are rising not falling. We spend two to three billion dollars per year on cancer research and sixty billion dollars per year on treatment and we are losing the war on cancer. The cancer industry is big business and due to economic gains no one is willing to do anything about it. We are slowly poisoning ourselves out of existence. Our food is poisoned from the soil on up with huge amounts of fertilizers, pesticides and synthetic hormones. Then, in order to prolong shelf life, additives and preservatives are thrown in. Our cows and chickens are fed literally tons of hormones and injected with antibiotics. Ever wonder why there is such an increase in hormone-related cancers at younger and younger ages? Our water is so polluted with environmental toxins that we are forced to buy a free commodity in bottle form. The “Clean Air Act” was suppose to clean up our air pollution but instead it has inadvertently flooded our drinking and bathing waters with carcinogenic toxins that has affected everyone within a 3 mile radius of a gas station and has been directly linked to cancer incidences. The movie “Erin Brokovich” is based on a true story of what is happening all over the country…especially in impoverished areas. Big chemical companies think they can set up camp anywhere and letting chemicals seep into our soils which eventually contaminate our waters and they get away with it!

Over a lifetime, the average American will be exposed to about 50,000 chemicals, only a fraction of which have been tested for their effect in humans. Besides exposure to the pollutants in our air, water and food, we poison ourselves with allergens in our household cleaners, mercury in our dental fillings and pharmaceutical drugs that outright kill 100,000 Americans every year. Where do these toxins and drugs come from? They come from the industries that contribute the most money to political campaigns. Isn’t it about time that we, as a nation, get together and say “no more!” Let us protect our ourselves, our children, our grandchildren, and let us protect each otherfrom being extinguished as a people. Let us protect mankind for if we do nothing we will continue to watch innocent men, women and children die from the effects of all the chemicals and toxins that pollute our water, our air, our soil, and our homes. Have youever seen an innocent child suffer from cancer? Their pale faces peering at you with pleading eyes and their bald heads shining from the effects of the chemotherapy ravishing through their little bodies. They’re so sick and tired that it takes all their energy just to sit up in a hospital bed while their friends are outside playing without them. It breaks myheart to witness this. It breaks my heart to witness children growing up without their mother’s love and protection because she has also succumbed to cancer. Or to watch a young woman struggling to raise three kids on her own because their father also died an early death.

Our politicians, our nation, should pledge one trillion dollars toward research and education to eliminating cancers. This money must not turn into just another financial boom for the research industry and the pharmaceutical companies. Nor should any board director of any research hospital or any board director of the American Cancer Society or National Cancer Institute be allowed to invest monies into any pharmaceutical drug or medical patent in regards to cancer treatment. We need to reform the system now! We should take a stand on reforming our environment and passing laws to protect our children from excessive exposure to chemicals. We should take a stand on healthcare and heighten awareness on screening for cancers because early detection is the best and most effective cure. We should increase public awareness on diet and how it is directly responsible for heart disease and some cancers. Maybe this will help to decrease cancer incidences and in saving some 600,000 innocent children, women and men who succumb to this disease every year. IS ANYONE READY TO TAKE A REAL STAND?

Please call or write your congressmen and congresswomen and senators and let your voice be heard. Citizens for Health is a good starting point because they keep track of legislation affecting medical freedom – that is, the right for doctors to practice and for patients to have access to preventative medicine and nontoxic, effective healthcare. Citizens for Health also follows food safety and environmental issues which links to many other specialized organizations. Many of these tell you which legislatures are on key committees and what their voting records are.
