David Stahl

David has been Music Director and Conductor of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra since 1984. He has also concurrently served as Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Bavarian Staatstheater am Gaertnerplatz in Munich where he conducts up to 50 performances a year. He has guest conducted over 90 orchestra and opera companies all over the world including the Lyric Opera of Chicago, New York City Opera, Bavarian State Opera and the Orchestras of Dresden, Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Berlin. He was an assistant of Leonard Bernstein at the New York Philharmonic and in Europe and he conducted West Side Story on Broadway. He is married to Karen Stahl, a cancer survivor, and they have three children, Byron, Anna and Sonya. He was a friend and neighbor of Annie and Nick Scandalios for many years.
