More and more people are diagnosed with cancer every year - cancer has become an expected and accepted disease. There even seems to be an acceptable level of death from cancer. What has happened since Richard Nixon declared war on cancer in 1971?
- By breaking cancer down into a vast array of related diseases - a must from a treatment perspective - the medical establishment has made it difficult to assess the true costs of cancer.
- By focusing attention on treatment, the health care industry has naturally steered the discourse away from prevention.
- By failing to take personal responsibility for our own health lifestyle decisions we have let the disease spin out of control.
It's time to light a fire under ourselves, to refocus on prevention, to increase research funding and to protect our environment. ASCEND believes that we must make cancer a national priority through awareness, education, prevention and scientific research funding. Cancer is now the top killer of Americans younger than 85. Now is the time to make preventing cancer a national priority - we don't have time to lose. ASCEND believes in unity among all cancer and disease foundations, advocacy groups and public health organizations in order to bring forth a strong message to key decision makers of the need for awareness and to continue funding cancer research at the highest level. Donations are tax deductible.
